Our 8 week paid placement will give you the chance to work across our shows and departments. You’ll get hands on skills and experience at BBC Radio 1’s HQ. 

Role Responsibility

The placement period will take place between: 


Monday 14th August – Friday 6th October 2023

During your time at Radio 1, you will work with multiple teams spending blocks of time across various departments. You will take part in creative meetings and complete a range of duties for production teams during and prior live shows.  


You will work on 2 x 3 week rotations, working with a programme team and another Radio 1 department. You will also have a mentor, who will spend time with you every week to discuss how your placement is going as well as your future plans. 


We are a 24/7 station so hours across the placement will vary. We are also keen that our trainees have a diverse experience and have as much involvement as possible. Therefore, we are looking for people who are flexible and are willing to work weekends or late nights. We will do our best to take personal circumstance into consideration when designing the schedule.

YOU NEED TO:

  • Be creative and brilliant, passionate about radio, music and everything that appeals to a young audience.
  • Know about current music, culture and entertainment trends. 
  • Be into new technology and social media and will get how this is impacting on us and our audience.
  • Be from any background, and any part of the UK. You don’t need to be an extrovert, you could be quietly confident in your abilities. 

YOU DON’T NEED TO: 

  • Have any qualifications or radio experience. Instead, demonstrate that you have a big imagination and a genuine enthusiasm for exploring and building a career within media and radio production.

Essential:

  • This role is for people at the start of their career. If you already have paid experience within the BBC then you will not be eligible for this placement.
  • Hold documentation that gives you the legal right to work in the UK full time, to be eligible for this scheme. 
  • You must be 18 or over by the placement start date to be eligible for this placement available to work across London for the 8 weeks.

  • Find and acquire recording artists, songs and producers through demos, recordings and live performances.
  • Cultivate relationships with artists and representatives and negotiate deals.
  • Solicit producers and coordinate meetings with artists and producers.
  • Spearhead recording, mixing and mastering sessions.
  • Select singles and key tracks.
  • Gather deliverables, negotiate producer agreements, mixer agreements, gather label copy and deliver assets to operations team.
  • Act as liaison with artist, artist managers and art department regarding marketing concepts.
  • Provide comprehensive feedback on new music to head of label.
  • Review and recommend submitted/solicited demos as well as online material.
  • Provide creative input and direction on artist’s material.
  • Plan and monitor recording budgets for assigned projects.
  • Keep projects within agreed budget and schedule/timeline.

Requirements

  • 6-8 years of experience in A&R and artist development.

ABOUT STONES THROW

Stones Throw Records is an independent record label founded in 1996 by DJ Peanut Butter Wolf with offices in Los Angeles and London. Known for a richly diverse roster, past touchstone releases include albums by Madvillain, J Dilla, Madlib, Mayer Hawthorne, Dam-Funk and Aloe Blacc. The current roster includes artists such as Sudan Archives, Mild High Club, Knxwledge, Mndsgn, Benny Sings, NxWorries (Anderson. RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Project Coordinators support staff in both the UK and US with specific campaigns, as well as doing more general supportive tasks.
  • Contribute marketing ideas in regular meetings and research new opportunities for our artists.
  • Attend meetings and make notes.
  • Save and label assets in asset libraries.
  • Compile clearly formatted and comprehensive campaign updates in a timely manner.
  • Weekly sales reporting and quarterly international sales reporting.
  • Assist with the production of value adds, posters, retail marketing assets, etc.
  • Attend shows and label markets, helping with guestlists and/or merch on the night when needed.
  • Create visually compelling pitching decks to be used throughout campaigns.
  • Some in-house press and radio for certain campaigns.
  • Ensure artist profiles on DSPs and socials are up to date and visually consistent.
  • Create press releases and fill out launch plans.
  • Share assets with third parties.
  • Contact tastemakers with new releases and events and help build out our directory of tastemakers and VIPs.
  • Assist with creative, e.g. book video locations, source stylists and photographers, help schedule shoots.
  • Other ad hoc assistance where needed.

Requirements

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  • Genuine passion for and knowledge of Stones Throw’s music and history.
  • Minimum 1 year of professional experience working in the music industry
  • A good attention to detail and visual presentation is essential.
  • Strong communication skills, especially the ability to write fluently and clearly.
